Construction Type: Alteration and Addition to Heritage House

Dundalk Residence is a heritage restoration and adaptive reuse project in Parkview, Johannesburg, in which an existing historic house is carefully reworked to accommodate contemporary family living.

The original structure is retained and transformed into generous primary living spaces - including lounge, dining, kitchen, and guest accommodation - while a new private family wing is introduced around a central courtyard, housing en-suite bedrooms, study, pyjama lounge, staff accommodation, and garages. A new entrance element links the old and new buildings, establishing a clear spatial threshold while maintaining the legibility of the original house. The new architecture responds sensitively to the heritage fabric by remaining subordinate to the historic façade, echoing its proportions and rhythms, and avoiding forward projection beyond the original street presence. Taller, carefully positioned elements introduce filtered natural light into deeper, recessed interior spaces, while the courtyard operates as a spatial and climatic mediator, reinforcing privacy, daylight, and indoor–outdoor living.
